about this design
Aloha A & Y,
I took a number of liberties with the layout. I do not recommend spiral stairs to the upper level. Instead, the stairs are 42" wide allowing for the addition of a stair lift if needed in the future. Under the stairs, the built-in cabinetry is reminiscent of a tansu. An island cooktop with a downdraft is the center of the two-story kitchen. Adjoining the kitchen is a tatami room separated by partial-height sliding panels. The Tokonoma could be accented even more if the window placement is modified.
In the center of the main living space, where the kitchen is today, is the laundry center. Shoji screens block this off from view when not in use. A utility sink and wall cabinets offer convenience and storage. On the back wall of the laundry center is the reading room.
I also recommend modifying the master bedroom. The bed against a niche wall will allow you to open your eyes to the view as you awaken each day. The niches could hold books and mementos. In the hall leading to the master bath are linen cabinets then a small water closet with sink. The master bathroom features two vanities, a six-foot tub and a double shower/steam room.
Please review the design and give me your input.
